Amanuel Habte is 17 years old from the Benshangul-Gmuz region. He encountered bilateral post-polio paralysis after birth. Amanuel's friends and neighbours thought the cause to be evil and advised that the he should be taken to holy water. Amanuel crawled around on stony, muddy and dusty paths, which was tiresome and painful. His mother and sisters used to carry him to and from school.
Eventually, Emanuel was referred to Cheshire by a catholic priest who was aware of the rehabilitation service available to children affected by post polio paralysis. After assessment, Amanuel was admitted and underwent orthopaedic surgery, conservative correction and physiotherapy treatment. Now, Amanuel walks with the help of crutches. Through counselling he no longer perceives himself as worthless and useless. He has engaged in handicraft skill training and feels like he is now a productive and valuable member of society.
“Thanks to Cheshire, I am born again!!! I am equal with my friends. I will go to church with my family and start my education. I have the courage and passion to be a good and successful student. God bless Cheshire and the staff that have done good things for me”
